The Neptune Deep Water Port Project

In February of 2008 Ramnäs received a big order from APL for chain and accessories of a bit over 3900 mtons for the Neptune project. The ordered chain was 138mm studless anchor chain of grade NVR3 and NVR4 and the accessories consisted of anchor shackles and H-links amongst others. The mooring system is used to moor the buoys that the LNG vessels dock to. The certification company used was Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
The manufacturing of the chain and accessories started a couple of months later and the order was delivered in the beginning of 2009.
Neptune is a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility proposed by a SUEZ LNG NA subsidiary off the coast of Massachusetts. It is designed to meet New England’s growing demand for natural gas using a new technology that is safe, reliable and environmentally sound.

The Neptune facility will consist of a buoy system where the LNG vessels will moor and discharge revaporized LNG or natural gas, by using onboard vaporization equipment. The natural gas will be transported via a sub sea pipeline into the existing Algonquin pipeline system’s HubLine which will deliver the natural gas to customers throughout Massachusetts and on to the rest of New England.
The site that was identified to be best suited for Neptune is located 22 miles northeast of Boston and 10 miles of the coast of Massachusetts’ North Shore.

The Neptune facility will provide an average of 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to the New England market - enough to serve 1.5 million homes each day. On very cold days and other periods of high demand, Neptune can increase its delivery rate to 700 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. This will do much to address the growing supply problem, and ensure that homes here have heat, when temperatures drop and electricity year round.
